Shellharbour: Branches Seafood Restaurant

I was flipping through the Lake Times and saw that Branches Seafood Restaurant had a 3 course chef special for $36. Curious, I quickly went to their website for more information.

It's my Mum's birthday coming up and we were wondering where to take her for birthday dinner. The Branches Seafood Restaurant is the location of many a celebratory dinner whether for birthday, anniversary or just a special treat. I have fond memories of Scampi brought home one night from my Mum's meal. They were butterflied and grilled with garlic butter. Mmm... my mouth is watering at the memory of it.

I love the sound of the Fried Camembert

Traditional Catch sounds delicious. Fresh seafood is something Branches has always been famous for. Garlic and butter with seafood - a match made in heaven as far as I'm concerned!

Dessert is where I have trouble deciding. Branches Baileys Profiteroles sound delicious but I think the Chocolate Fondant is calling me. Or the Passionate Panna Cotta. Hopefully I won't have to make a decision and we have all four desserts on the table and share them.

Children's Menu

They also have a Children's menu that includes standard favourites of chicken, fish and chips, nachos, pizza, pasta and icecream but with a refined flair.  They even have my childhood favourite - vanilla icecream topped with milo. Something there for children of all ages. The neptunes catch with calamari and fish pieces, fruit and salad for $9.50 sounds like excellent value.

Ala Carte Menu

Also available is the Ala Carte menu which I am more familiar with and still featuers my all-time favourites.

Scampi $55
Deep sea crustaceans grilled with an exciting ouzo, garlic and lemon marinade

Oysters Mornay($27 )
A dozen oysters topped with a delicious mornay sauce and lightly grilled

Steak and Lobster tail ($39)
Tender beef cooked to your liking, garnished with lobster tail and a delicate cream and ginger sauce
seafood platter ($130)
For your next special occassion, pre-order our spectacular seafood platter. A hot and cold assortment of ocean fresh seafood, garnished with an ice statuette.per couple without lobster ~ 130.00 • per couple with lobster ~ market price

Located in the Shellharbour Resort just North of Shellharbour Village on the doorstep of the Blackbutt Forest Reserve, the Branches Seafood Restaurant is a lovely spot for romantic couples or a family affair.

If you are able to get babysitting, why not take advantage of the accommodation packages and really spoil yourself. For $230 they have a Queen bedroom package which includes a 3 Course Dinner in Branches Restaurant dine-in or room service and a full cooked breakfast. The room comprises of a queen size bed, complete with Free Austar TV, Wifi, reverse cycle airconditioning, microwave, fridge, toaster with a toilet and shower ensuite.

Cookbook: What's Cookin' Shellharbour

WHAT'S COOKIN' SHELLHARBOUR?

Generations of family secrets have been revealed in a new Shellharbour City Council cookbook featuring over one hundred of the area's favourite recipes.

The new book, What's Cookin' Shellharbour?,  features a diverse range of tried and true family favourite recipes allowing interested community members to learn a whole new series of easy to cook and wholesome dishes.

Residents were asked to provide Council with the recipe to their favourite family recipes with the end result seeing an innovative mix of entrees, mains and deserts.

"We have received an amazing amount of input from the general community in creating this cook book with local residents only too happy to provide recipes to their favourite family celebration dishes," said Shellharbour City Council Good Neighbour Coordinator, Craig Swaney.

"Each of the recipes featured in the book holds a special meaning to the person who provided it with many of the dishes having been handed down through the generations.

"All of the ingredients used in the dishes are purposely easily accessible, with the end result being an easy to cook, wholesome, family meal.

"The first cook book Council released in 2004 had the desired effect of bringing the community together and creating stronger neighbourhoods and we are looking forward to achieving the same positive outcomes through the release of What's Cookin' Shellharbour?"

A free copy of What's Cooking Shellharbour? is available at Council's Administration Building Ground Floor or by

My Chocolate Shoppe Kiama!

My Chocolate Shoppe has moved!

I was really sad when a comment was made on this blog that my favourite chocolate shop had closed down. Luckily I'm a wiz at research and found a listing in the White pages for My Chocolate Shoppe in Kiama. Yay! Yet one more reason to make the trek down to Kiama! Shellharbour Village will never be the same for me but I'm glad that they are still in business!

Restaurant Review: La Marina Tapas Bar and Restaurant, Wollongong

One of my favourite restaurants of Shellharbour, La Marina Tapas Bar and Restaurant has moved to Keira St, Wollongong. If you like Spanish food then you'll love La Marina.

Below are some of the meals we enjoyed at La Marina when they were still located in Shellharbour. I hope to visit their Wollongong store very soon. Don't forget to buy a carafe of their sangria. It makes the Spanish dining experience even more authentic!

It was Australia Day and we were also celebrating a friend's birthday. We had a table of four diners and decided to start with Parilla de Mariscos, a BBQ'd seafood platter A selection of grilled seafood including fish, scampi, king prawns, squid, pippies, and mussels served with chips and salad on the side.($36.00 - Min. 2 persons). Next, several tapas were chosen including tasmanian scallops, pippies, whitebait and a very enjoyable chorizo sausage in dry sherry. Delicous! It almost makes you want to scream out 'Ole!'

After we were seated, we were presented with some free almonds, nicely spiced and a great start to a wonderful meal.

La Marina restaurant, Shellharbour: Scallops
Seared Tasmanian Scallops - In chilli & roasted sweet paprika with garlic & white wine 11.90

Everyone had a taste of the scallops which were superbly cooked and the sauce was amazing.

La Marina restaurant, Shellharbour: Pippies
Almejas - Pan cooked pippies with white wine, garlic and parsley 11.50

A very morish dish which we all enjoyed a sample off. It brought back memories of collecting pippies on the beach, looking for the tell-tale bubbles in the sand. A definite favourite.

La Marina restaurant, Shellharbour: Whitebait tapas
Chanquettes - Lightly floured white bait deep fried, served with lemon wedge 10.50

Not really to my taste but the men at our table really enjoy the crispy whitebait, although after sampling the scallops and pippies I can't see the attraction.

Chorizo a la Jerezana 10.90

This potent Spanish sausage was cooked in a dry sherry and onion sauce, served in a sizzling dish which caused everyone to lean forward with expectation. The smells alone made our appetites revive. The sherry sauce was amazing and complemented the sausage well. Not for the faint of heart, though. There is always the chance that spicy sausages will repeat on me later and this was no exception.

I loved the decore of La Marina. It is like you have been transported to Spain. The warmth of the rich red tones and colourful decorations. A joy to visit and while away an hour or two with good food, conversation and share the experience with friends and family.

Food styling

Over the weekend I attended the Shellharbour Village Craft Fair and purchased a few items which will feature in upcoming home cooking blog entries. I hope to share them with you soon. I have been photographing food for years but only recently have I started to style the food I photograph. I have been looking at food photos in magazines for years but never really absorbed the amount of detail in each photo and the story or theme being communicated which make the food look more attractive and professionally photographed.

One of my favourite food photographers on flickr is Latartinegourmande and Bea has a website latartinegourmande.com. Recently she wrote an article on Food Styling and Food Photography which I found inspiring (as always) and prompted me to realise that if I had to make a choice between food photographer and food stylist I would definitely choose photography.

Unfortunately since I don't have a food stylist to make the food look great (other than in restaurant reviews, with the work being done by chefs) I will need to continue with my feeble attempts at food styling until I was lucky enough to be assigned a food stylist on a paid food photography job. I have to admit I am enjoying the search for props and looking at presentation and colours is quite a tasty challenge. I've never gone to the extremes used by professional food stylists as outlined in the Choice Magazine writes an article on Food Styling.

Regular roast chook dries up, shrinks and browns unevenly. And while it may smell great at the dining table, it looks pretty unappealing in a photo... How to style it: First decide on the chook’s best angle — in this shoot, the stylists consulted the photographer and his assistant and the raw chook’s credentials were discussed at some length. Then the skin at the foot and neck ends is trimmed and sewn in place. It’s carefully trussed, firmly stuffed with paper and oven-cooked for about twenty minutes to ‘set’ the flesh. The skin is ‘cooked’ to brown crispiness using a coat of soy sauce and paprika and a heat gun. A coat of oil makes it look hot and juicy. In our shot a skin graft has even been used to get a pasty area near the wing looking perfect. The result: Plump, juicy, perfect roast chicken.

It makes me sad to think that there are magazines in Australia that still use this method and feel the need to go to such extremes to make a chicken look tasty but then I remember the times I have photographed roast chickens in the past and they were never as appetising as those in glossy magazines. Now I know why :(

stylist's toolboxThe article included a photo of a food stylist's kit and it caused my stomach to drop. PVC glue to replace milk in cereal shots; gravy browning or soy sauce to give that cooked meat look; cardboard or plastic to keep a hamburger from flopping under the weight of the meat and tomato; hairspray to make cake look glossy and appealing; coloured mash potato to imitate icecream; fabric protector to keep the maple syrup from soaking into the pancakes and pinned berries; soft wax drops painted with sauce for effect for desserts; a coat of glycerine for glossy seafood; liquid glucose to make noodles for a 'hot, fresh look'; motor oil in place of maple syrup; cutting holes in cheese for the perfect swiss cheese look; injecting mashed potato under the skin of a chicken leg to give it a perfect shape. Wow! That's a lot of work. And we wonder why the product on the box or up on menus in fast food restaurants rarely resemble the products actually purchased.

I am proud to say that I have never doctored up any of the food that I have photographed. The most I have done is re-arrange food on a plate and stolen garnish off one dish in a Thai restaurant to complement another. The original serving was ghastly so I did the best I could whilst working against the clock of the food going cold, much to the chagrin of my family who were hungry and waiting to eat.

After styling:

Any steam you see is real, the lighting usually natural and I try to sit my party close to the window or natural light source whenever possible. I will be working on my food styling in terms of arrangement, props and lighting but promise not to try and sell mutton dressed up as lamb. It might be the prettiest mutton you've ever seen, perched on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes with some age defying colour schemes but I wouldn't go as far as a spray tan to recover its days of youth. If there is soy sauce used then it is for flavour purposes alone.

And if there are any readers out there who live in the Illawarra (or willing to travel) and would like to build up a food styling portfolio and work with me for free until then, please get in contact. I am also able to travel to you if necessary.

Alternatively, if you are a restaurant that wants to work on some photos for a menu or website, advertising or other project, do feel free to contact me. I'd love to do more to develop my food photography portfolio and one day achieve the goal of getting paid to take photos of mouthwatering food and every journey starts with the first step. I am not ashamed to say that I will work for food or barter :)

Food Markets of the Illawarra

One of the things I have been learning of late (both on tv shows such as River Cottage Autumn, web-based organisations such as Slow Food) is the importance on sourcing local food suppliers. We all know that fresh is best and the shortest distance between supplier and our dinner plate the better. That's why I love visiting fresh food markets such as the Shellharbour Village Markets, Kiama Produce Market and Wollongong Produce Market, .

Shellharbour Village Craft Markets
Held every second Sunday 9.00am til 2.00pm in the grounds of Shellharbour Public School
Mary Street SHELLHARBOUR NSW 2529.
2009 dates include May 10th, June 14th, July 12th, August 9th, September 13, October 11th, November 8th, December 13th. Be sure to mark them on your calendar!

Stalls of note include the fresh fruit and vegetable stall, Razorback Grove Olives (producers of fresh olives, olive oil and cheeses), fudge, fresh herb plants and assorted arts and crafts.Note: If you know of any Illawarra fresh produce markets or suppliers of fresh produce who sell direct to the public please let me know!
